Inspired by the masterwork photobook GENESIS (2013) by the Brazilian photographer Sebastião Salgado, a team of book designers based in Germany has decided to create a striking artbook dedicated to the trees of the world. Unlike GENESIS, however, this will not be the work of a single artist, but the collective creation of artists—professional or amateur—from around the world.
The aims of the project are to draw attention to trees worldwide in the most inspiring way, through artists’ direct, creative engagement with real trees, and in all their aspects, not just the beautiful; to provide funding for those working to save this vital resource and heritage; and to create a valuable information platform.
This invitation is to a project whose roots stretch back over twenty years. It was at this time that I came to Freiburg in southern Germany as a student, and one of my favourite pastimes was to wander around the old parts of town. There I discovered trees that didn’t belong: giant old cedars, at least one hundred of them, sometimes dominating a garden or destroying a path. It seemed as if the old houses had to struggle to maintain their place amongst the trees.
I was deeply impressed. I had just studied photography and my idols were Ansel Adams and Bruce Barnbaum, photographers who created their own distinctive visions of nature. My interest in great photographers convinced me that while a tree is beautiful in its own right, it can become immeasurably more beautiful when photographed. I had no theory about this, it was just a feeling. But I had a growing desire to visit each of these trees, to study them, and to capture them at exactly the decisive moment.
I am now absolutely convinced — and this is the fundamental idea behind the project — that there is a very special relationship between man and trees and that there are very few things that inspire us as much as trees do. Bringing together works by artists from around the world, the main aim of this monumental project is to verify and document this conviction. We want the artists who take part to succumb, once more, to the fascination of trees. We want to illustrate an incredible range of perspectives, inspirations, and artistic expression. If we can produce such a convincing testament to the deep-seated connection between man and trees, then we can raise awareness worldwide both of the importance of trees and of the dangers they face. Perhaps it will be one step towards halting the increasing rate at which trees are being lost.
This brings us to the second aim of this project: to compile as much information as possible about tree and forest initiatives around the world. We want to draw attention to the efforts of those who, whatever their discipline, are already convinced of the importance of trees, and to bring them together with those who have been inspired by this book. Last but not least, we will channel all profits from this project into initiatives that aim to protect trees and forests. All related information can be found on our website.
Please support us with your talent, your time, your enthusiasm. Let yourself be inspired and help us to create a truly impressive tribute to the trees of this planet.
An ambitious project like this requires substantial funding. Once the many images have been collected, finance will be raised through crowdfunding (Kickstarter), conducted, of course, with complete accountability and transparency at every stage: contributions will be held in trust till all the terms and conditions are satisfied, and all costs will be published on the project site and iPad magazine.
When sufficient funding has been raised, we will design and then publishing a limited edition artbook of outstanding quality. This will come with a stylish display stand, ready to be bought and displayed by museums, galleries, libraries, hotels, government departments, gardens, arboretums … There will also be a touring exhibition of selected images available worldwide.
Then a smaller and more affordable edition will be published for general sale. This will also serve as a “thank you” for those who contribute more than a certain amount, who will also receive a certificate recognizing their vital contribution to the project.
The iPad magazine will appear twice a year. This and the project site will be devoted not only to describing the progress of the project, but also to covering tree-related news from around the world and to creating an information platform that will include a comprehensive index of projects and initiatives.
With its wide range of striking images, the book will bear witness to our intimate relationship with trees and to the diversity of our interests in them. It will be based on artistic response to trees—on how they are seen through the eyes of artists. So we ask artist to submit works inspired by the specific trees they encounter where they live, work or travel. Most images will be photographs, but we will also be very pleased to include paintings, drawings, or high-quality prints—as long as they are creative responses to existing trees. As we are producing a big book (50 x 70 cm), it is essential that the technical quality of images is very high. Please look to the details in the upload section.
• Images will initially be shown as thumbnails or in small teasers onsite and in the iPad magazine. This is done in order to constantly attract new contributors and supporters. They will not at this stage be shown in high resolution, and contributors will be clearly identified. The quality of the book will be such that this ‘preview’ of images will on no way diminish their impact when published.
• When we have a sufficient number of images—around 500—and funding raised through Kickstarter, we will design the book, compose the texts and captions, and prepare for production.
• Production of the limited edition (printing, binding, the creation of display stands etc.) will begin when the requisite funding level has been reached. This will be done in collaboration with a major publishing house, who will have the trade connections to promote the book worldwide through advertising, well-publicized book launchings, and even auctions.
• Once the limited edition has been successfully launched, an affordable trade edition will be published. Artists will also receive a free copy and a personalised certificate, and be mentioned in the book and on the project site.
• At the same time, 80 images will be select to form a travelling exhibition available worldwide.
Progress throughout will be monitored on site and in the iPad magazine.
